Cyclones sweep past Grizzlies

The Montana women's tennis team opened its trip to Big 12/Big Ten country with a 7-0 loss to Iowa State on Saturday afternoon in a neutral-site match at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex in Iowa City.
Montana (1-2) dropped the doubles point to fall behind 1-0, but the Grizzlies pushed the Cyclones (3-1) at both No. 1 and No. 3. Catherine Orfanos and Hannah Sulz, at No. 1, and Nathalie Joanlanne and Stanzi Stuijt, at No. 3, both fell by 6-4 scores.
Lidia Dukic and Milica Panic, playing their second straight match together, lost 6-2 at No. 2.
"I thought we did a nice job of putting ourselves in a good position in doubles," said coach Steve Ascher. "We showed we're getting a little closer there.
"Obviously it's a focal point to get the doubles point, and I think we're showing improvement."
Iowa State won five of the six singles matches in straight sets, with Dukic pushing Maty Cancini to a super-tiebreaker at No. 2. Dukic rebounded from a 6-3 loss in the opening set to win 6-4 in set two before falling 10-5 in the breaker.
Joanlanne fell 6-1, 7-5 to Regina Espindola at No. 4.
"In singles we're just continuing to learn," said Ascher. "These are a lot faster courts than we're used to, so we're kind of adapting to things, and Iowa State is a very good team.
"We just need to raise our level a little bit in terms of our shot selection and discipline, but I thought it was a good day in terms of moving forward."
Montana will face Iowa (3-0) on Sunday at 5 p.m. (MT). The Hawkeyes and Cyclones play at 1:30 p.m. (MT) on Sunday.
