The Montana women netters will hit the courts for the final time in their challenging fall tournament season with perhaps the stiffest competition yet at the Barb Chandler Classic at Boise State.
The Griz will take an overall young group to Idaho, with freshmen Lauren Dunlap, Claudia Reguant, and Alex Walker getting the final reps of their first fall at UM.
Junior standouts Bianca Bostrom and Julia Ronney will also make the trip south to provide some upperclassman leadership.
Montana will be one of seven teams in attendance, facing off against the Pac-12's Colorado Buffaloes, the hometown Boise State Broncos, and Big Sky foes Idaho, Idaho State, and Eastern Washington.
The annual Barb Chandler Classic, one of the region's top tourneys, will be consist of three 16-person singles draws and two doubles draws of 16.
Play at the Appleton Tennis Center will run Friday, Oct. 26 through Sunday, Oct. 28 starting at 9 a.m. each day. Play will be moved indoors at the Boas Indoor Tennis Center should inclement weather occur. Links to live scoring from the tournament can be found at GoGriz.com.
The event caps a busy fall season for UM, a season that has seen them travel almost from coast-to-coast to prepare them for the most challenging spring duals schedule in program history.
During a month-long stretch from Sept. 14 to Oct. 13, Montana played in four tournaments, including stops at Weber State, the US Military Academy at West Point, and Gonzaga, culminating in the ITA Regional Tournament at UNLV.
Now with two weeks of time to regroup and learn from the tourney blitz to that started the season, the Griz head to Boise looking to cap the season on a high note.
"At that time we went back-to-back-to-back, so everything was hectic. But they've actually had a chance to do some work and practice, and now they have the opportunity to go implement it," said head coach Steve Ascher.
"It's been refreshing. It's been nice be back home and to work on the day to day, work in the weight room, put in the work on the court, get caught up in the studies. So, it was nice to get to that routine."
The Grizzlies will need to perform at their peak in Boise as well, with a grueling spring schedule staring them down come early January.
Montana opens the spring season just 18 days into the new year with a home doubleheader against the nationally ranked Washington State Cougars and another dual against the Michigan State Spartans to complete the triangular.
Duals against Minnesota, Colorado, Oregon, Portland, Tula, and Wyoming also highlight a nonconference schedule designed to have UM playing at its peak come Big Sky tourney time.
Before that gauntlet begins, however, Montana now needs to prove it can hang with the big dogs at the Barb Chandler Classic.
"We need to go down there and we need to find out, A: how can we free ourselves up to play to the best of our ability in the competitive matches, and, B: what have we learned that we can apply in the next few months before the Big Sky season starts," said Ascher.
The Grizzlies enter the tournament in Boise with a hot hand, however. Bostrom picked up the first tournament championship of her career at Gonzaga's Bulldog Invite earlier this month, taking a victory in the White bracket in Spokane.
Ronney and Dunlap were each standouts for the Griz at the ITA Regional in Vegas as well, each picking up first-round victories in singles play, and pairing in doubles to pick up a win as well.
Ronney won the second title of her career in Boise at the 2017 Chandler Classic and Bostrom also advanced to a semifinal to lead the Griz a year ago.
