Sophomores lead young Griz squad at Barb Chandler Classic

The Montana women's tennis team capped its fall season with a mixed bag of results against a talented field at Boise State's Barb Chandler Classic over the weekend.
Overall the young Grizzlies squad built with two sophomores and three freshmen went a combined 10-14 over the three-day tourney that featured the Colorado Buffaloes and host Broncos, in addition to the defending Big Sky Champion Idaho Vandals and three other Big Sky opponents - Eastern Washington, Idaho State, and Montana State.
"I think day one was successful, and I think Julia, Bianca, and Alex played well," said head coach Steve Ascher. "Saturday was difficult, and I think we got in our own way a little and did things that prevented us from showing our best self. Sunday, they did a great job, so overall it was a great weekend."
Sophomore standout Bianca Bostrom led the Griz by picking up two wins to advance to the semifinal of the Orange singles draw and picked up another victory in a consolation match over Boise State's Sydnie Binder (6-1, 6-4) to go 3-1 on the weekend.
Bostrom capped a strong fall season for the Griz by winning seven of her last eight matches, and earning her first tournament title at Gonzaga in early October, to improve to 8-5 overall in the fall, improving vastly from her 3-10 fall season as a freshman.
"She's developing like crazy," said Ascher. "She's been willing to do the work, and her individual sessions have been great."
Bostrom defeated Boise State's Frankie Trella in a grueling 6-4, 7-6(5) decision in the opening round and followed it up by building a 5-1 lead over Idaho's Shion Watabe before winning due to retirement.
Bostrom paired with fellow sophomore Julia Ronney in doubles to pick up a first-round victory over Idaho State's Hristina/Cvetkovic pair (8-5) before falling in the Blue draw quarterfinal to the home-team Palmer/Poling pair in a tight 5-8 decision.
Ronney also picked up a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 win over ISU's Huibre-Mare Botes to advance to the quarterfinal. There, she put up a fight against the always tough Vanessa Timm of Boise State, falling 7-6, 6-4.
Ronney bounced back, however, to pick up a huge win in the extra matches, dominating the Colorado Buffaloes' Brigitte Beck 6-0, 6-1 to pick up her second career win over a Pac-12 opponent. The win puts Ronney at 5-3 in fall singles results.
Montana's corps of freshmen also put some impressive performances on the court. Claudia Reguant bounced back from early-round losses to pick up a three-set, come from behind win over Colorado's Annabelle Andrinopoulos (2-6, 6-1, 10-7).
Lauren Dunlap also rebounded from a pair of early losses to defeat ISU's Andriene Pavek 6-2, 6-3 in extra matches on Sunday.
The Grizzlies now turn their focus to the offseason and preparation for the most difficult regular season schedule in program history.
With eight players all vying for one of six spots in the lineup, Ascher says the competition for playing time starts now.
"Where do you want to go? What is your vision? What do you do when you get up every morning? Do you sacrifice? And do you learn to do these things because you want to, not because someone is telling you," asked Ascher.
"These extra pieces build your endurance, strength, and mental stamina if you do it every day, and we need to train at a higher level than anyone else is willing to if we're going to achieve our goals."
