Griz sweep Ottawa to split weekend trip

The Montana women's tennis team convincingly defeated Ottawa University of Arizona on Saturday afternoon in Surprise, Ariz., sweeping the Spirit 7-0 in straight sets.
The nonconference win gives the Grizzlies (5-5, 1-1 BSC) a weekend split of their matches in the Grand Canyon State, rebounding from Friday's Big Sky Conference loss to Northern Arizona in Flagstaff.
"A conference loss is always tough, and it's good to go out the next day, rebuild, refocus, and get back on track," said Griz freshman Eimear Maher. "It felt good to get a good win under the belt for all of us."
In the first outdoor match Montana has played all season, the Griz had little trouble en route to the win, allowing OUAZ to pick up just a single win on all three courts of the doubled round, and no more than two games in the singles.
Maher and fellow freshman Bianca Bostrom managed a shutout of their opponents, picking up 6-0, 6-0 wins on singles courts four and six to put UM out to an early 3-0 lead.
"I feel like I got an opportunity to work on the things I didn't do very well yesterday against NAU, which was good," Maher added.
Montana junior Lidia Dukic returned to the court for the first time since late October having recovered from a wrist injury. The Santa Clara, Calif. native made an immediate impact as well, rolling to a 6-1, 6-2 win on court five to clinch the match for the Griz.
On court two, Nathalie Joanlanne picked up her sixth-straight victory with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Eliza Wood. Joanlanne was the only Grizzly to earn a win against the Lumberjacks on Friday, pulling off a come-from-behind victory in a third-set tiebreaker.
Head Coach Steve Ascher rested star freshman Julia Ronney against OUAZ, bumping senior Cam Kincaid up to the No. 1 position. Kincaid closed out the match for UM with a 6-1, 6-1 win. UM's other senior, Catherine Orfanos, also earned a win on court three, 6-2, 6-1.
The Griz now return home for a four-match homestand beginning March 2 against the Portland Pilots. The Brawl of the Wild will then take center stage on March 4 when the Montana State Bobcats visit Missoula for the annual grudge match.
