Young Griz shine at Weber State Invitational
9/17/2018 8:02:00 PM | Women's Tennis
The Montana women's tennis team knocked the lid off the fall tournament season at Weber State over the weekend, with the Grizzlies' young squad picking up valuable reps in a three-day round-robin tournament against the Wildcats.
Â
Of the six players who traveled to Ogden, three were freshmen, and two were sophomores, with senior Lidia Dukic the lone upperclassman on a trip that saw the Griz get in 23 singles matches and 12 doubles matches over the three-day marathon.
Â
Despite the youthful lineup, the Grizzlies faired well against the Wildcats, going 11-12 overall in singles play, and 4-8 in doubles play. UM picked up wins when push came to shove, however, going 5-3 in three-set matches and 7-1 in tiebreakers.
Â
With a difficult fall tournament schedule on the horizon and an even more difficult spring schedule coming up in the spring, 11th-year head coach Steve Ascher says the trip was just what the doctor ordered to get his young team up to speed.
Â
"I think it was a great experience. Our attitude was great, our composure was great, the way they competed was good, and we learned a ton of stuff we have to work on," said Ascher.
Â
"You can get carried away with schedules and tournaments and those things, but at the end of the day, you just have to play. Getting the experience of four singles and four doubles matches each is vital. I thought It was awesome."
Â
In singles play, freshman Lauren Dunlap was outstanding for the Griz, going 3-1 in her first college tournament while picking up a win over highly rated Wildcat freshman Yuuna Ukita, a Japanese standout with a 10 UTR ranking, in a third set tiebreaker.
Â
Dunlap followed up her singles performance by doing undefeated (3-0) in doubles play alongside her partner, sophomore Bianca Bostrom.
Â
Dukic also came away from Ogden with a winning 2-1 singles record, while UM's sophomore contingency of Bostrom and Eimear Maher left even at 2-2 on the weekend.
Â
Freshmen Claudia Reguant and Alex Walker each picked up their first collegiate wins as well, with Reguant finishing day three with a marathon 3-6, 7-6, 12-10 come-from-behind win.
Â
With Dunlap dominating and Walker and Reguant each finding success, Ascher is happy with what he saw out of his emerging stars.
Â
"The way they handled themselves, their composure was fantastic," said Ascher. "They showed a controlled aggression. I'm impressed. They're young, but I'm impressed."
Â
Montana will now turn its attention to one of its toughest tests of the fall season when they travel to New York to play in the West Point Invitational on the hallowed grounds of the U.S. Military Academy in two weeks from Sept. 28-30.
