Griz fall short against Weber State

The Montana women's tennis team started its weekend home-stand off against fourth-ranked Weber State, going up 3-1 before the Wildcats rallied from behind to win the match 4-3.
The Griz began doubles competition on fire, notching the doubles point behind outstanding performances by sophomore Julia Ronney and Bianca Bostrom. The pair set the pace for Montana, winning 6-4 while freshman Alex Walker and senior Nathalie Joanlanne followed up in similar fashion to win on court three 6-4.
Montana kept momentum rolling in singles play behind a stellar tiebreaker performance from Bostrom to take the first set 7-6 (7-2.) Ronney, playing right next to her doubles partner, roared ahead of Weber State freshmen Patty Kuo to win the first set 6-2.
The pair would both fight through adversity, falling behind in the second set to fend of the rally to win the second and third game point for Montana.
"Julia and Bianca have just been a constant. Julia to come out and play a little beat up at this level is fantastic and Bianca is just getting better by the day," said head coach Steve Ascher.
Weber State won their first point of the match after freshman Lauren Dunlap struggled to find her rhythm losing 3-6, 2-6. Joanlanne came out swinging early but lost momentum after losing the first set in a tiebreaker, eventually falling short 6-7 (5-7), 2-6 to hand Weber State their second point of the afternoon.
Freshman Alex Walker looked to take her success from doubles action into singles competition but also struggled for Weber State to even the match at 3-3. With momentum shifting to the Wildcats, senior Lidia Dukic took the court and roared back in the first set to win the tiebreaker 7-6 (7-3).
Dukic found herself in similar circumstances with the weight of a Montana victory falling on her shoulders in the second set. After trailing 1-3, she pin-pointed a serve across the net to set the score at 2-3.
The next point would go to Weber State after Dukic perfectly cut the ball, hitting the net and unfortunately falling back onto her side to trail 2-4. Dukic continued to land impressive shots with great placement but Weber State's Megan Lombardi didn't let up to win the second set.
After going down 1-4, Dukic exhausted all her energy and ultimately lost 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 3-6.
"Lidia, as a senior is fighting out there, but her opponent just played a little bit more aggressive and sometimes its just hats off to your opponent. Lidia continues to fight like crazy and did a great job," said Ascher.
Montana falls to 3-16 overall and 3-6 in Big Sky Conference play heading into their final Big Sky Conference match of the regular season against Northern Arizona. The Grizzlies will honor seniors Dukic and Joanlanne in their final home match tomorrow at Peak Racquet Club at 9 a.m.
