The Montana men's tennis team rolled to a clean 7-0 win over Lewis-Clark State in Lewiston, Idaho, on Sunday to remain undefeated on its three-match weekend road trip west. The win moves the Griz above the .500 mark, now at 4-3 on the young season.
Montana won each of its singles matches in straight sets and didn't drop more than two games in any one doubles match en-route to the shutout. The win comes after UM picked up a pair of victories over George Fox and Whitman College in Walla Walla on Saturday.
"The guys took care of business today, and we got better as the weekend went on," said head coach Jason Brown.
"To play three matches in about 30 hours is tough, but we showed heart and competed well. I couldn't be happier with how the weekend wrapped up."
Doubles continue to be rock solid for the Griz, winning each match against the Warriors 6-0, 6-2, and 6-2. UM has now won the crucial point in six of its seven matches, including wins over Nevada, Gonzaga, and Boise State, with its only loss to Utah.
"Doubles has been flawless," added Brown. "It's a real bright spot right now."
Montana continued to show its strength into the singles round, not dropping a set in any of the six matches.
Sophomore Oisin Shaffrey improved to 5-2 on the season on court four – the most overall wins on the team – with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of LC State's Matus Rusnak. Fellow sophomore Pontus Hallgren improved to 4-0 on the singles court this season with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout as well on court six.
With Brown continuing to shuffle the lineup in the leadup to conference play, Hallgren's older brother, senior Ludvig Hallgren, picked up his first win of the year at the top of UM's lineup on court one. Playing at the top didn't slow down the elder Hallgren either, taking a comfortable 6-2, 6-0 win over the Warrior's William Bruchard.
The Griz now return to Missoula for their home-opener next weekend on Feb. 22. UM will get a pair of final tuneup matches against regional competition before starting Big Sky play when Whitworth comes to town for a doubleheader at the Peak Racquet Club. Start times for the doubleheader are set for 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Both matches are free and open to the public.
