The Montana women's tennis team dropped a pair of competitive matches played to clinch under the Arizona sun on Saturday, falling 4-0 to against the San Francisco Dons and the Arizona Wildcats in Tucson.
Â
The two losses drop the Griz to 1-10 as they battle through another one of the most difficult schedules in program history in an effort to be prepared when the Big Sky Conference schedule comes around.
Â
"I thought we competed well again today in both matches, but we need to step up and really keep pushing these matches further," said head coach Steve Ascher.
Â
Montana continued to be strong at the top of the lineup, with first-team All-Big Sky junior Julia Ronney won the first set and was leading in the third when the match against San Francisco was called in favor of the Dons.
Â
She capped her day by taking an early lead against Arizona's Talya Zandberg, but again the match was called before she could have picked up an upset.
Â
Sophomore Alex Walker was the only other Grizzly to win a set on the day, taking a 7-5 victory in the first and leading 5-4 in the second on court six against the Dons' Amber Del Rosario when the match was called. Walker and her doubles partner Lauren Dunlap were also holding the lead on court three, up 5-4 when USF clinched the point.
Â
Montana returns home for its second-to-last nonconference matchup of the season against Portland on March 6 before turning full attention to the Montana State Bobcats for the Brawl of the Wild match on March 8 in Missoula.
