The Montana men's tennis team started hot on the road at Gonzaga with a win in the doubles round, but the lead wouldn't last as the Bulldogs claimed four-straight singles wins to pull out a 4-3 win over the upset-minded Griz.
The loss moves Montana to 1-2 in the young season and opens UM's three-match weekend slate with a nail-biting defeat. Gonzaga improves to 5-2.
"The best team, playing at home, won today. So, congratulations to the Zags," said head coach Jason Brown.
"There were a lot of positives to take from our fight on the courts today, though. Doubles was excellent, and the efforts of Ed Pudney and Oisin Shaffrey were absolutely outstanding. We are going to try our best to recover and prepare for an even better Boise State team tomorrow."
Playing on the No. 1 doubles court for the first time, Pudney and Cameron Isbell got the Griz going with a clean 6-2 win to start the round. Seniors Max Korkh and Ludvig Hallgren then clinched the point for UM with an equally impressive 6-2 win on court two, and it appeared the Griz were in business with a 1-0 lead over the home team.
The lead wouldn't last for long, however, with Isbell not able to carry over the momentum in a 6-2, 6-1 loss to GU's Kyle Everly on court six, and Milo Benn falling to Theo McDonald 6-3, 6-2 on court five to give the lead back to the home team. The Bulldogs then clinched the win on court one, where Korkh fell 6-1, 6-3 to GU's Sam Feit.
Meanwhile, Pudney and Shaffrey battled their way to a pair of tiebreaker wins on courts three and four. Pudney bounced back from a loss in the first set to beat Vincent Rettke 5-7, 7-6 (7-4), 1-0 (10-3), and Shaffrey also needed an extra frame to get past Oliver Andersson 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 1-0 (15-13), but it was too late for the visitors from Missoula.
The Grizzlies continue their two-match road stretch with a neutral site dual against Boise State on Saturday afternoon at the Stevens Tennis Center in Spokane before returning home for the third match of the weekend against Seattle in Missoula starting at 10:30 a.m. at the Peak Racquet Club.
