MISSOULA, Mont. – In a season that is ever-evolving, Montana once again made a schedule change over the weekend, adding a home game vs. Whitworth, set for Saturday, Jan. 9 at 2 p.m. The contest is the Grizzlies' third home game that has been added since the season began in late November.
Montana is 9-6 all-time against Whitworth, a Division-III school out of Spokane, Washington. The two teams last met in an exhibition contest in November 2018, a 90-58 Griz victory. They also played a regular-season contest a year prior, with Montana opening the 2017-18 season with a 72-60 win.
Whitworth played two exhibition contests in December, but its season will officially get underway this week, with the Pirates hosting the College of Idaho on Wednesday and Thursday.
Whitworth has been the class of the Northwest Conference historically, finishing in first or second place every year since 2004-05 and going 359-70 (.837) during that 15-year stretch. Mainstays in the NCAA Division-III tournament, Whitworth advanced to the Sweet 16 last season before COVID-19 canceled the remainder of the tournament.
Damion Jablonski was the D3hoops.com West Region Coach of the Year in 2020, his first leading Whitworth after longtime head coach Matt Logie transitioned to Point Loma. The Pirates graduated three senior starters from last year's squad, but return five players who started at least five games.
Montana assistant coach Zach Payne is a 2014 graduate of Whitworth, where he won a pair of conference titles as a player, before spending three seasons as a volunteer assistant and graduate assistant coach, where the Pirates won three more conference titles and went a combined 74-12 (.860) with three NCAA tournament berths.
