Eastern Washington starts hot, wins opener over Montana
2/18/2021 10:31:00 PM | Men's Basketball
CHENEY, Wash. – Montana ran into a buzz saw on Thursday, falling at first-place Eastern Washington, 90-76. The Eagles, who have now won eight consecutive games and average 80.0 points per game, made 14 consecutive shots early in the contest to build an insurmountable lead.
The Eagles made their first three shot attempts to take a 7-2 lead just 99 seconds into the game, but they were just getting started. It took Eastern Washington just 6 minutes to take a double-digit advantage, and the Eagles held a 20-point lead just 10 minutes into the contest. Eastern Washington went 9 consecutive minutes without a miss at one point, making 14 straight shots to build a game-high 47-20 advantage.
Montana closed the half on a 14-4 run, but never got closer than 12 points for the remainder of the game.
The loss was Montana's largest Big Sky margin of defeat under head coach Travis DeCuire, who lost a Big Sky game by double digits for just the third time in seven years (138 games). The biggest bright spot for Montana was the play of freshman Robby Beasley III, who scored a career-high 25 points. Beasley shot 9-of-16 from the floor and made three first-half 3-pointers. Sophomore Eddy Egun also scored a career high, seeing his first action in five games and scoring 16 points on 4-of-6 shooting.
The thing that can give Montana optimism moving into Saturday's rematch is the fact that the Grizzlies out-scored the Eagles 60 to 54 over the final 30 minutes. Montana also out-rebounded Eastern Washington, 36 to 31.
