The Montana softball team opened its home series against Southern Utah with a pair of losses on Saturday at Grizzly Softball Field in Missoula.

The Thunderbirds improved to 7-1 in Big Sky Conference games with 9-1 and 10-3 victories over the Grizzlies (11-26, 3-8 BSC), who have dropped their last eight league games since opening 3-0.

Southern Utah scored in each of the first four innings in the opener to build a 7-0 lead and never looked back. The Thunderbirds had six extra-base hits, including a pair of home runs.

SUU scored in each of the first five innings in Game 2. The Thunderbirds would outhit the Grizzlies 12-3.

"The biggest challenge for us is to continue to work to settle," said coach Melanie Meuchel. "We are pressing for everything we're doing and in that pressing, we get outside of ourselves in the ability to compete.

"That is a lot of our talk and what we need to overcome at this point."

Montana's lone run in the opener came on an RBI single by McKenna Tjaden in the fourth that scored Jessica McAlister and upped Tjaden's hitting streak to 12 games.

After falling behind 2-0 in the top of the first in Game 2, Montana grabbed its only lead of the day when Cami Sellers came up in the bottom half of the inning and hit a three-run home run.

McAlister was hit by a pitch, Maygen McGrath doubled to put two on for Sellers, who hit her second home run in four days, her sixth of the season.

The Grizzlies would have just one hit over the final six innings as Southern Utah pulled away.

Tjaden went 0 for 2 to see her hitting streak come to an end at 12. McGrath finished the day with a pair of doubles.

The teams will play the series finale on Sunday at noon.
