Undefeated performances highlight Griz weekend at EWU tourney

The Montana women's tennis team continued to post strong fall tournament results at the Eastern Washington Hidden Duals over the weekend.
The Griz were one of four teams competing in Cheney, with Idaho, Seattle, and the host Eagles each sending their top six players.
In the mixed singles and doubles format, Montana won two of three doubles rounds, beating Idaho in round two and EWU in round three, and also beating the Eagles in round one of singles play.
In singles, the Griz received three shutout performances, with senior Lauren Dunlap, junior Ivayla Mitkova, and sophomore Nancy Cabanas each going undefeated on the weekend with a combined 8-0 record.
Cabanas, a transfer from Butler, and Mitkova each went 3-0 while Dunlap withdrew from day three singles due to illness with a 2-0 record. All told, Montana picked up wins in nine of its 17 singles matches.
In doubles, UM's senior/sophomore pair of Maria Goheen and Aili Hietala swept all comers with a 3-0 record at the tourney. Montana rebounded from a 2-1 loss to Seattle in round one to blank Idaho 3-0 in round two.
The Griz capped the weekend with a doubles win over EWU, with Dunlap and Rosie Sterk combining for their second-straight win.
"This tournament showcased how the team is learning to take every opportunity to compete and grow," said head coach Steve Ascher. "The wins will be valuable as we head to the regional tournament and we'll get the chance to learn from the losses as well."
Montana now turns its attention to the premiere event of the fall season, the ITA Mountain Regional tournament set for Oct. 12-15 in Las Vegas, where the top six players from the best teams in the Rocky Mountain West will compete.
