
Griz host Utah State and Portland for two-match homestand

MISSOULA, Mont. – The Montana women's tennis team is back in action this weekend, this time in Missoula. The Griz are set to host their first pair of matches at home for the season on Friday, Feb. 25, and Sunday, Feb. 27.
Montana hosts Utah State on Friday, where the match is scheduled for a 12:30 p.m. start. The Griz continue the weekend homestand on Sunday, where they are scheduled to face Portland at 10:30 a.m.
Both matches will be located at the PEAK Racquet Club and admission is free for all fans and spectators. For those unable to attend, links to live scoring can be found at GoGriz.com.
Junior Olivia Oosterbaan gives us an inside look on how the Griz are feeling now that they get a homecourt advantage for the first time this season. "It's huge. It's awesome to have fans and having a home court is huge for our match," said Oosterbaan.
The Griz are coming off a three-match tour in Vegas, going 1-2, while facing Dixie State, UNLV, and North Dakota. Montana picked up its first win of the weekend versus Dixie State, downing the Trailblazers 6-1, respectively. UM then dropped matches to UNLV (0-7) and UND (3-4) to finish the weekend.
Going into the homestand matches this weekend, the Griz look to improve their 4-5 record. Head coach Steve Ascher is excited for the matchup this weekend as he states, "It'll be a good matchup. I think it's going to be really competitive and I think the fans will love it. It'll be fun to have a chance to showcase the matches this weekend."

SCOUTING UTAH STATE:
- USU is 2-1 overall on the season, defeating Dixie State and Big Sky foe, Weber State. The Aggies dropped to Idaho State 3-4 for their only loss of the season.
- In recent history, Montana and Utah State have met 16 times, with the last meeting being in March of 2018. The Griz hold a record of 6-10 versus the Aggies and have yet to host a match.
- The last time UM beat USU was in 2012 when the Griz won 5-2.
- The Aggies return juniors Zara Ryan and Carolina Millan who both received All-Mountain West singles honors in 2021.
- Head coach Sean McInerney is in the midst of his eighth season with Utah State and owns a record of 83-71.
SCOUTING PORTLAND:
- Portland is 2-3 on the season, taking its only two wins against Big Sky foes Portland State (4-3) and Eastern Washington (6-1).
- The Griz and Pilots have met seven times in recent history, with the Griz holding a record of 2-5. The last time the two teams met was in 2021 when the Griz came away with a 5-2 victory playing on Portland's courts.
- Playing in position two all season, UP brings in freshman Sally Pethybridge who achieved a junior (U18) ranking as high as seventh in Great Britain, prior to enrolling at Portland.
- Filip Zivkovik is in his first year as the head coach of the Pilots. Zivkovik served as an assistant coach for the program since 2010.
A GLIMPSE AT THE GRIZ:
- Grizzlies Grace Haugen, Lauren Dunlap, and Olivia Oosterbaan lead the team in singles, each owning a record of 5-4.
- Haugen and Dunlap also lead the team in doubles, each carrying a record of 6-3.
- Freshman Rosie Sterk holds a record of 3-1 in singles and 4-3 in doubles.
- Junior Maria Goheen posts a 2-2 singles/doubles record after playing in her second weekend with the Griz.
- Head coach Steve Ascher owns a record of 124-175 in his 14th season with the Griz.
