MISSOULA, Mont. – The Montana women's tennis team fell to Utah State, 6-1, in its first home match of the season. The team now carries a record of 4-6 on the year.
"We learned a lot from our match today. Grace came through in a tough fought battle. Olivia and Ivayla competed well beating a good doubles team at the top spot," said head coach Steve Ascher.
Utah State came out strong in doubles to clinch the first point of the day. Rosie Sterk and Lauren Dunlap played USU's County/Kung on court three, where they fell 6-3. Shortly after, Grizzlies Maria Goheen and Grace Haugen lost to Ozturk/Millan, 6-4, allowing for the Aggies to go up 1-0. Juniors Olivia Oosterbaan and Ivayla Mitkova came away with a win on court one, taking down the Ryan/Lavatai pair 7-6 (4).
Montana tried to break Utah State's momentum going into singles but the Aggies kept it going throughout. Senior Dunlap finished first on court three, taking a straight-set loss against Aggie Zeynep Naz Ozturk (6-2, 6-2).
In position two, Grizzly Oosterbaan fell to Carolina Millan in a tight matchup. Oosterbaan lost the first set 6-0, but came back in the second, pushing Millan to seven points and scoring five herself.
On court three, junior Goheen gave USU's Zara Ryan a run for her money, bringing Ryan to a tiebreaker in the second set. Despite the effort, Goheen fell in straight sets (6-3, 7-6 (3)).
Freshman Haugen gave the Griz their lone point of the day in position one, taking sophomore Lisa Kung to three sets. Haugen took the first set, winning 6-4, but fell in the second 6-3. The freshman faced the challenge ahead of her and downed Kung in the third set, 6-0, respectively.
Grizzly Mitkova battled it out against Annaliese County on court five, taking the first set 6-4 and falling in the second set 6-3. With each winning one set, the match was brought to a super tiebreaker where County took a 10-5 win, making the score 5-1 for the Aggies.
Senior Claudia Reguant was the last to finish in position six, falling in straight sets to Gabrielle Dekkers, 6-3, 6-3.
