Griz golf set to compete in Bobcat Desert Classic

MISSOULA, Mont. – The Montana women's golf team is back in action, this time in Goodyear, Ariz., to compete in the Bobcat Desert Classic.
The 54-hole tournament will take place Monday and Tuesday at the Golf Club of Estrella. The Griz will play alongside 10 other teams, including seven Big Sky foes: Eastern Washington, Idaho State, Montana State, Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado, Southern Utah and Weber State.
The team will play 36 holes on Monday and finish the last 18 on Tuesday, with a tee time of 7:30 a.m. (MT) on both days. Live scoring can be found on gogriz.com or golfstat.com.
"I'm hoping we can play a lot better as a team this week. I think the course is less demanding than last week, making it more scoreable if we can get everyone clicking at the same time. We need everyone to click at the same time if we want to do well," said head coach Kris Nord.
Nord will be traveling seniors Kylie Esh and Allison Sobol, and juniors Jessica Ponce, Tricia Joyce and Emmy Sundby.
Esh, Sobol, Ponce and Joyce all come off last week's tournament in Maricopa, Ariz., where the team placed 20th overall.
Esh comes off the tournament scoring 226 for three rounds (76-79-71) and tied for 38th place in the tournament. After logging three birdies in the last round, the senior tied her career-best score with 71.
Sobol finished the tournament scoring 75 in the first round, 87 in the second round and 81 in the third, leaving her overall score at 243.
As with Sobol, Joyce concluded the tournament sitting at 243 overall (82-81-80). Ponce sat at 71st once the tournament was finished, scoring rounds of 81, 75, and 88.
Sundby hasn't competed since the Red Rocks Invitational, where she helped the team finish 13th. Sundby tied for second overall on the team and 50th overall in the tournament. The junior scored rounds of 78, 76 and 76, scoring 14 over par.
After the Bobcat Desert Classic concludes, Montana will travel to Scottsdale, Ariz., to compete in the Big Sky Championships from Monday-Wednesday, April 18-20.
