MISSOULA, Mont. – The Montana women's golf team heads to Arizona for its second-straight weekend to compete in the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic in Maricopa, Ariz. The two-day, 54-hole tournament will be contested on the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club Monday-Tuesday with tee times of 8:30 a.m. (MT). Live scoring will be available throughout the tournament and can be found at gogriz.com.
The Griz are set to play alongside 21 other teams, including seven Big Sky foes: Eastern Washington, Southern Utah, Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado, Portland State and Idaho. Though the playing field is tough, head coach Kris Nord expresses his excitement and preparation for the tournament.
"We've had pretty good weather to practice on the courses, on the greens, and that's two weeks of practice that we normally don't get going into this stage of the season. So, I'm excited. I think we have the ability to surprise some people.
"I really hope our girls embrace the idea that we should be getting into the middle of the pack and beyond. I know they believe that, we just need a couple of good rounds to kick that into action and get them to buy it entirely."
Nord will be traveling five players for this tournament: seniors Kylie Esh and Allison Sobol, juniors Jessica Ponce and Tricia Joyce, and sophomore Madison Cecil.
"It was really tight for the fifth spot. We've been asking them to survive that low spot and get it going again, and they're all doing that, which makes it harder once you get to the point where you just take five," said Nord.
The team comes off a strong weekend at the Red Rocks Invitational, where they tied for 13th but all had impressive individual performances.
Senior Esh returns to the green after shooting three rounds all at 76 or under at the Red Rocks Invitational, making her overall score for the weekend 224, tying her career-best. The senior also tied for 28th overall in the tournament out of 104 players.
The last tournament Sobol competed in was the Lady Thunderbird Invitational, where she shot an overall score of 252 (88-82-82).
Ponce comes off a solid performance at the Red Rocks Invitational, shooting 74, 79, and 77 to bring her to 230 overall, which happens to be the lowest score of her collegiate career.
As with Sobol, Joyce last competed at the Lady Thunderbird Invitational, where she scored 247 (84-85-78) on the weekend.
Sophomore Cecil marked a career-best performance at the Red Rocks Invitational, scoring three rounds of 81, 77, and 75, making her overall score for the weekend 233.
The focus going into this weekend's tournament: managing the course. "It's a tough course with a lot of bunkers throughout, fairway bunkers and greenside bunkers, so that sets it apart from what we've been playing. Between that and watching out for rattlesnakes," Nord said with some humor.
The Griz will be back in action, Monday-Tuesday, April 11-12, where they will travel to Goodyear, Ariz., to compete in the Bobcat Spring Invitational.
