Griz finish strong at Eagle Invitational

The Montana women's tennis team rebounded from a day one sweep to send two of its three teams through to the consolation bracket final of the Eagle Invitational tournament, held Friday through Sunday, Oct. 6-8, at Eastern Washington in Cheney.
Â
Montana went 7-1 overall and 5-0 in singles on Saturday, helping send UM's "A" and "C" teams to the title round of the back draw.
Â
The Eagle Invite was a mini-dual competition with teams divided into pairs to play one doubles and two singles matches per round. The team with the most points will advance in the bracket.
Â
UM's "A" team of Maria Goheen and Olivia Oosterbaan swept Seattle University's "C" team of Anastasia Nikolova and Lola Tavcar 3-0 in the semifinal to advance.
Â
Meanwhile, Montana's "C" team of Haily Murphy and Shivika Agrawal also swept EWU's "C" team of Anait Arutiunian and Kenzington Mann 3-0 to book a trip to the final.
Â
Instead of competing against one another in the consolation final, coaches split the teams to play extra matches against players from other teams to close out the tournament.
Â
"The response was awesome. I think we grew in terms of our discipline and really staying with strategy and tactics that were working, and I think we also competed really well. So, that was huge for the weekend," said head coach Steve Ascher.
Â
"Physically, we're getting stronger, building our match endurance, and seeing improvements in that area, which is the goal of the fall."
Â
Eastern Washington won the Eagle Invitational as the home team, with the EWU A team of Scout Matthews and Isabella Foshee beating the Seattle University A team of Elena Kraleva and Liliya Dimova 2-1 in the main stage championship round.
Â
Montana will next turn its attention to the premiere event of the fall tourney season, the ITA Mountain Regional, this year set to be held at the Eccles Tennis Center in Salt Lake City hosted by the University of Utah.
Â
The Mountain Regional features players from the top D-I teams in the Rocky Mountain West, from Montana to New Mexico, and runs Oct. 18-21.
Â
The Griz then cap the fall season at the Gonzaga Invitational Oct. 27-29 in Spokane.Â
