The Montana women's golf team wrapped up its fall season with a ninth-place showing on Tuesday at the French Broad Collegiate Invitational in Arden, N.C.
The tournament, held at The Cliffs at Walnut Cove, was scheduled to be 54 holes but was cut to 36 when rain forced the suspension of play on Monday before teams had played even nine holes.
Round 1 was completed on Tuesday morning, followed by Round 2, all of it played in cold, damp conditions on a soggy course.
Montana shot rounds of 328 and 326 to finish ninth out of 10 teams. Of the field's 20 team scores over the two rounds, there were twice as many scores of 320 or higher (nine) than sub-300 (four).
Clemson (290-288) and UNC Charlotte (298-298) were the lone teams to shoot sub-300 rounds. Host UNC Asheville (304-304) finished third.
"It rained over two inches yesterday, so it was pretty rough out there," said coach Jimmy Mee. "Today it was cold and the course was still soaking wet, so it played really long. That was the tricky part.
"It's hard to get excited when you know it's going to be miserable and cold and nasty. Everybody had moments of battling through it. It's just hard to do for hours on end."
Griz underclassmen Katie Lewis (79-80) and Bella Johnson (79-80) both tied for 25th in the 52-golfer field.
"They got back to acting like themselves on the golf course," said Mee. "It was fun to see them get back into the normal charisma they have."
Raina Ports (86-77) tied for 36th, Hannah Ports (85-89) tied for 47th, Kate Bogenschutz (85-90) finished 49th.
UNC Charlotte's Pinky Chaisliprungruang (70-69) and Clemson's Isabella Rawl (71-71) both finished under par on the par-72 course. UNCC's Emma Heyman (69-77) was third.
"You hope for it to be 75 and sunny with no wind," said Mee. "It was still a really cool experience despite what Mother Nature had planned. The host families we stayed with were awesome."
Montana won't be back in competition until the Bowling Green Intercollegiate in Litchfield Park, Ariz., in mid-February.
