The Montana women's golf team wrapped up the Sun Mountain Intercollegiate on Tuesday with a team score of 304 and five Grizzlies matching or playing their best round of the tournament.
Â
The event was held at The Ranch Club in Missoula.
Â
"We saw some smiles and some people enjoying golf," said coach Jimmy Mee, whose team opened with scores of 319 and 305 on Monday and finished the tournament in sixth place out of six teams.
Â
"If we can clean some things up and still go have fun, then you can play some good golf. We're heading in the right direction."
Â
Nobody is heading in a better direction than Bella Johnson, who added to her scores of 76 and 72 on Monday with another even-par 72 on Tuesday. She tied for seventh at 4-over.
Â
Johnson entered the tournament with a fall scoring average of 81.0.
Â
"She's one of our better players but she was in a weird head space and not having any fun," said Mee. "She decided to be confident and have some fun and look what happens. You go play some good golf."
Â
Hannah Ports (75-78-73), Raina Ports (80-79-74), Salina Lui (84-79-73) and Hope Torres (86-83-80) all had their best round of the tournament on Tuesday.
Â
The top 23 rounds on Tuesday, on an ideal day for golf, were played at 74 or better, with Weber State sweeping both the team and individual titles.
Â
The Wildcats (294-296-290) won the tournament by six strokes over Portland State (294-297-295), with Idaho (297-295-295) one stroke behind the Vikings.
Â
Weber State's Braylyn Bayer (73-72-69), at 2-under, won the tournament by three strokes over a trio of pursuers and had to come up with some big shots late in the final round to clinch the title.
Â
Tied with Idaho's Zoe Newell going into her final hole, Bayer birdied while Newell, on a different hole, found the water and closed with a double-bogey.
Â
Hannah Ports finished 19th, Kate Bogenschutz (78-73-80) tied for 29th, Raina Ports finished 31st, and Lui placed 35th in the 41-golfer field with her best round of the fall.
Â
Katie Lewis (86-75-77) finished 36th, Anna Stensrud (82-78-81) tied for 37th and Torres finished in 41st.
Â
Montana has one final fall tournament, the French Broad Collegiate Invitational in Arden, N.C., at the end of October.
Â
"This is why we play in the fall, to see things from our players. You want to compete in every tournament but we need to figure out who we're going to be playing in the spring," said Mee.
Â
"We've seen some good golf from everybody. That's what we need to see in the fall."
Â
The event was Montana's first home tournament with at least six teams since the fall of 2013.
Â
"The Ranch Club was awesome and the course was in phenomenal shape," said Mee. "I think all the teams enjoyed it. It was a good inaugural tournament. We'll improve on it and try to grow it."
