The Montana women's tennis team is back home this week looking to add what would be the biggest win of the season to the Grizzly resume as Montana State pays a visit to Missoula on Saturday afternoon. The annual Griz/Cat, "Brawl of the Wild" dual gets underway at 2 p.m. at the Peak Racquet Club south of Missoula off Blue Mountain Road. Â
Â
At 3-13 on the year and 1-5 in league play, Montana currently sits eighth of nine teams in the Big Sky standings, needing to win-out for a chance at returning to the conference championship tournament in Phoenix at the end of the month.
Â
The Griz enter the dual looking to snap a seven-match skid, pick up their first home win of the year, and earn their second conference win of the season after beating winless Weber State 6-1 on the road in late February.
Â
Montana State, meanwhile, comes to Missoula at .500 on the year with a 9-9 overall record and 3-3 in Big Sky play with a 3-7 road record. The Bobcats have gone 2-1 in their last three matches, with a win at Weber State, a narrow loss to second place Idaho in Bozeman and win over Idaho State in Bozeman as well.
Â
Montana is paced by senior Grace Haugen who leads the team in both singles and doubles wins this season. At No. 1 singles she's built an 8-5 overall record and is 3-3 in league play. In doubles she and her partner, fellow senior Rosie Sterk, are making a strong case for all-conference honors with an 11-4 record as a pair, making them the second-winningest team in the Big Sky.
Â
The Griz/Cat dual is part of a Montana tennis doubleheader on Saturday, with the men's team facing Eastern Washington at 9 a.m. followed by the women's dual at 2 p.m. Both matches at The Peak are open to the public and free of charge.
Â
The Griz conclude the regular season on April 20 in Missoula as Eastern Washington (3-11, 1-3 BSC) comes to town for senior day in a match that could determine UM's postseason fate with only the top six of the nine teams in the conference advancing.
