The Montana softball team lost games to No. 4 Oklahoma and to host New Mexico State on Friday as the Troy Cox Classic got under way in Las Cruces, N.M.
Â
The Grizzlies fell to the Sooners 17-0 as Oklahoma hit eight home runs. One game later, Oklahoma put up 18 runs on the Aggies. The Sooners scored 21 in a win at Arizona last weekend.
Â
"They are ranked where they are for a reason," said coach Stef Ewing. "They are one of the best offensive teams in the country. They've got some serious power."
Â
Freshman Audri Elias made the start against the Sooners and got out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the top of the first by only allowing a sacrifice fly to center.
Â
But Oklahoma got to Elias for two home runs in the second. Montana threw Carah Sweet, Kaiana Kong and Brooklynn Braun at the Sooners and Oklahoma got to each of them for at least one home run.
Â
"The most impressive thing about them is how quick they are to make adjustments," said Ewing.
Â
"Audri only gives up one (run) in the first inning, then as soon as they have some time to talk about it, boom. They did that multiple times with multiple pitching changes."
Â
Montana hurt itself early in Friday evening's 8-3 loss to New Mexico State.
Â
The Grizzlies left six runners on base through the first three innings and had three errors in the opening two innings to fall behind 4-0, three of those runs unearned off Griz starter Cameryn Ortega.
Â
"We have to play better defense and take care of the ball. You can't spot a team four runs like we did," said Ewing. "I liked our fight and the adjustments that we made."
Â
Needing a spark, Montana got it from Anna Cockhill in the top of the fourth. After Kong led off with a single and Danielle Biehl was hit with a pitch, Cockhill hit one out over the left-field fence.
Â
Her third home run of the season pulled Montana within a run at 4-3. Cockhill had one home run as a freshman last season.
Â
"Her work in the weight room is showing and she has confidence after getting a year under her belt. She is looking to drive the ball," said Ewing. "Expect to see more from her. She is just getting started."
Â
Kong, in relief of Ortega, gave Montana a chance to rally when she got out of the bottom of the fifth without giving up a run after the Aggies loaded the bases with nobody out.
Â
The first-year junior got a pair of swinging strikeouts and ended the threat herself, with a ground out back to the circle.
Â
New Mexico State scored a handful of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, cross home plate four times on three hits.
Â
Cockhill and Kong both had two hits, JoJo Christiaens had a triple to the fence in center in the top of the seventh, her team-leading fourth extra-base hit of the season.
Â
Montana will play a doubleheader at UTEP on Saturday, with games at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
