Griz win a close one on the road

The University of Montana women's tennis team improved its record to 3-2 with a narrow 4-3 victory over the University of Portland Friday in Portland, Ore., at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center.
The Grizzlies were catapulted to victory by solid play at the four, five and six positions. Sophomore Ashley Mackey won another three-set match at No. 4. Mackey has gone to three sets in four of her five matches this spring, winning three of them. Freshman Precious Gbadamosi won handily at No. 5 and sophomore Maddy Murray sealed it with a straight set win at No. 6.
Freshman Laurence Pelchat, who did not play against New Mexico due to a medical precaution, was back in action today but did not get pushed very hard. Pelchat claimed the fourth point for the Grizzlies when Milagros Cubelli was forced to retire mid-way through the first set. Pelchat was down 3-4 when Cubelli withdrew.
"The team responded great in singles," said coach Steve Ascher. "Each player showed grit and determination in each match.
"We battled down to the wire, and we pulled out a good victory."
Junior Heather Davidson lost in three sets to Anastasia Polyakova at No. 1 and freshman Sasha Carter was defeated in straight sets at No. 3 to round out the Griz singles.
Montana struggled in doubles dropping all three matches. The regionally ranked pair of Davidson and Pelchat lost at No. 1 doubles 8-4. The duo has yet to win a match this spring.
Montana will play its first conference match of the season against Portland State Saturday in Portland, Ore., and complete the road trip with Seattle University, again, in Portland.
