Gonzaga won its home opener Friday afternoon, defeating the Montana women's tennis team 7-0 at GU's Stevens Center in Spokane. With the loss the Grizzlies drop to 0-3 on the season, while the Bulldogs improve to 2-1.
Junior Hannah Sulz and sophomore Cam Kincaid picked up their first win of the young season with a 6-2 victory at No. 2 doubles, but senior Haley Driver and junior Francis Dean lost 7-5 at No. 1, and sophomore Catherine Orfanos and freshman Lidia Dukic dropped a 6-2 decision at No. 3.
"We came out with strong energy today and put ourselves in a good position to win the doubles point," said coach Steve Ascher.
Driver, at No. 1, and Dean, at No. 2, played tight opening sets once the match turned over to singles. Both would lose in tiebreakers. Driver fell 7-5, Dean 11-9. Both would go on to lose their second sets.
Dukic pushed GU's Nevada Apollo early at No. 3 but lost 6-4, 6-2. Kincaid dropped her opening set 6-0, then rallied for a 6-4 win in set two, the team's only singles set victory, before falling 6-2 in the third.
"Haley, Francis and Lidia all put together solid first sets in singles. Cam made some good adjustments and improved her singles play, and pushed her opponent into a tight, three-set battle," said Ascher, whose team will play Nevada at noon (MT) on Saturday.
"All in all it was a solid day. The team showed a lot of growth after only a couple days of practice between our matches last weekend and today."
