On Thursday Northern Arizona (12-6, 6-1 BSC) secured a crucial win against Sacramento State to take over first place in the Big Sky Conference. Two days later the Lumberjacks continue to maintain their first-place lead, defeating Montana (3-7, 2-2 BSC) by a score of 6-1.
When doubles began it appeared the Grizzlies and Lumberjacks were going to be in for a long and tight duel.
At No. 1, Hannah Sulz and Cam Kincaid were tied with Blanka Szavy and Hanneke Lodewijks 6-6 when the point was decided.
At No. 2, Hailey Rochin and Eirene Granville outlasted Catherine Orfanos and Francis Dean 7-6. At No. 3, Jordan Denesik and Marta Lewandowska defeated Lidia Dukic and Stanzi Stuijt 6-4, giving the Lumberjacks a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
Seizing momentum from a hard-fought doubles match, Northern Arizona made sure to secure the singles matches to remain first in the conference.
At No. 1, Lodewijks defeated Dean 6-3, 7-6. At No. 2, Szavy had a dominant victory over Dukic with a 6-1, 6-2 score.
At No. 3, Lewandowska won 6-2, 6-3 against Sulz. At No. 4, Kincaid would secure Montana's only point with a 6-4, 6-3 score against Rochin.
At No. 5, Denesik defeated Orfanos 6-4, 6-4. At No. 6, the match ended with a 6-2, 6-2 victory for Granville over Stuijt.
"Northern Arizona started off pretty strong with winning the doubles point," Stuijt said. "They are used to their new facility, courts and high altitude."
Montana has lost its last three matches all of which were on the road. Despite the setbacks Stuijt isn't reserved about praising her teammates' perseverance.
"We are equal to each other, which makes our lineup quite strong," she said. "We have really good discipline, and we are fighting for every single ball. We support each other through matches and also off the court, which makes good energy."
When Stuijt was asked what the team needs to do to win upcoming matches she responded, "We need to put the energy in the right direction and use it from the beginning, starting off really energetic in doubles. It feels amazing to win the doubles point as a team; we can use it to give each other energy heading into singles."
Montana plays Monday against Arizona State (11-4, 4-1 PAC-12) at 3:00 p.m. (MT) in Tempe.
