The desert has not been kind to Montana this season. Arizona State (13-4) shut out Montana (3-8) with a 7-0 score in Tempe, Ariz., on Monday afternoon.
The Sun Devils were succeeding early in the match starting with doubles.
At No. 1, Ebony Panoho and Alexandra Osborne defeated Cam Kincaid and Hannah Sulz 6-0. At No. 2, Desirae Krawcyzk and Stephanie Vlad defeated Francis Dean and Catherine Orfanos 6-1. Doubles concluded at No. 3, with Kassidy Jump and Sammi Hampton winning 6-0 against Stanzi Stuijt and Lidia Dukic, giving the Sun Devils a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
Arizona State wasted no time racking up six more points against Montana in singles. Completing their third consecutive shutout, six total on the season.
At No. 1, Desiree Krawcyzk defeated Francis Dean 6-1, 6-2. At No. 2, Kassidy Jump defeated Lidia Dukic 6-2, 6-2.
At No. 3, Ebany Panoho defeated Hannah Sulz 6-0, 6-2. At No. 4, Stephanie Vlad defeated Cam Kincaid 6-0, 6-0.
At No. 5, Sammi Hampton defeated Catherine Orfanos 6-0, 6-0. At No. 6, Gussie O'Sullivan defeated Ana Carbo 6-4, 6-1.
"ASU did a really good job today being mentally tough and very disciplined in their game styles," Orfanos said.
It would be easy for most teams to quit on the season after a series of hard defeats on the road. Coach Steve Ascher's philosophy of learning and development leaves no room for such thoughts.
"We competed well and learned a lot," he said. "It was a lot of fun and challenging to play against a team of that caliber. We're now excited to head east!"
Much like her coach, Orfanos sees the team growing and developing after every match. "Our team is learning a lot this season on the road. We are taking big steps as individuals and as a team," she said.
She also wants the Griz fans to know the team is not intimidated with upcoming road matches against strong programs. "We are expecting to fight!" she said. "We will be facing fierce competitors with impressive stats, we have to take risks and challenge ourselves. I'm really excited for the competition ahead!"
Many coaches and players will tell you there is more to a team than what the statistics show. For the Montana women's tennis team, it has proved match after match it is not afraid of any competition, and no team or individual will break the spirit or pride it carries while representing the University of Montana and the countless fans who bleed maroon and silver for the Griz.
Montana plays Wednesday against Richmond (8-6) at 11 a.m. in Richmond.
