A long trip of intense competition on the road culminated today with Montana (3-11) having another difficult defeat at the hands of No. 32 William & Mary (14-7) by a score of 6-1. The loss leaves the Grizzlies still searching for their first win on the road this season.
William & Mary was able to lock up the doubles point after successful winning scores of 6-1 and 6-4 to take the early lead before singles began.
Much like they have all season, the Grizzlies fought a fierce series of singles matches against the Tribe but were unable to emerge with an upset.
At No. 4, Cam Kincaid went into an intense series against Olivia Thaler, falling by scores of 7-6, 2-6, 0-1 (10-6). At No. 5, Catherine Orfanos captured the Grizzlies' sole point, defeating Cecily Wuenscher 6-4, 6-3. At No. 6, Stanzi Stuijt hung with Cecily Wuenscher being defeated 6-2, 6-4.
Despite not having an upset against perennial tennis schools yet this season, coach Steve Ascher isn't shy about how proud he is of his athletes. "We had another day of great determination and competing," he said. "We are moving forward and getting ready for a push in Big Sky play next weekend."
Montana is counting on using its confidence and newfound fighter's mentality to enter into the final portion of Big Sky Conference play. The team's next five matches will be at home, where it has defended its fortress with sound wins against conference rivals North Dakota and Montana State this season.
Montana plays Friday against Idaho (11-8, 5-2 BSC) at 9 a.m. at the Peak Racquet Club.
