Coming down towards the end of the season is when teams in contention for conference championships often play their best. Today at the Peak, Montana (3-13, 2-4 BSC) was shut out 7-0 by Sacramento State (10-8, 6-1 BSC), which has now shut out its opponent in three consecutive matches.
Â
Sacramento State got the lead early, taking the doubles point after solid wins with scores of 6-1 and 6-3. The Hornets would not let up on the pressure when the teams moved to singles matches.
Â
The Hornets coasted, securing their shutout and legitimizing why they are gunning for their 12th regular-season Big Sky title in the last 13 years.
Â
Montana's best match came at No. 1, when Francis Dean fought in one of the more intense matches of the season, falling to Alina Soltanici by a score of 6-4, 6-3.
Â
Bouncing back from a shutout is never as simple as it may seem. Many teams tend to throw in the towel after a difficult defeat against a historically powerful opponent. That, however, should not be issue for Montana this season.
Â
No matter the adversity or challenges that keep coming, they show no sign of quit and are always ready to fight to the very end against anyone who schedules them. It's teams like that who inspire fans and alumni alike to take pride in being a Griz, proudly wearing their maroon and silver wherever they go.
Â
Montana plays Sunday against Northern Colorado (6-10, 2-6 BSC) at 9 a.m. at the Peak Racquet Club. The Bears lost Saturday at Montana State 4-3.
