Griz blank Vikings for third-straight win
2/10/2018 1:19:00 PM | Women's Tennis
Coming off back to back victories in Bozeman against Montana State and Seattle, the Montana women's tennis team (3-3, 1-0 BSC) continued its winning streak Saturday morning against Portland State, blanking the Vikings 7-0 to pick up a third-straight win.
Portland State (0-4, 0-1 BSC) came to the Peak Racquet Club in Missoula shorthanded due to injury and illness, with only four athletes able to compete for the Vikings.

The result was an immediate 1-0 doubles lead and a 2-0 overall advantage for Montana, with the Griz earning default victories on court three in doubles and courts five and six in singles before a ball was served.
From the onset, this meant the Grizzlies needed just one doubles win to clinch the point, and one more singles win to seal the dual victory. And the Griz did just that.
Head Coach Steve Ascher spoke to the team before the matches began, reminding them about the mental strength it takes to play a team which is short on players and fighting injuries. The Griz were up to the task all day.
"It kind of throws the energy in the building off and the pressure is different," Ascher said. "They did a great job of putting the fire out, so to speak."
Starting in doubles play, senior Cam Kincaid and freshman Bianca Bostrom dominated PSU's Valk/Zador pair 6-1 to seal the point for UM on court two.
On court one, freshman Julia Ronney and junior Nathalie Joanlanne came from behind to force a tiebreaker, before putting away PSU's Upeniece/Knecht pair in the extra period, 7-6 (7-1).
The Griz then took their confidence with them into the singles round. Quick and dominant performances resulted in two early wins for the Griz, coming from Bostrom on court three (6-0, 6-1) and senior Catherine Orfanos on court four (6-0, 6-1).
On court two, Joanlanne also made quick work of PSU's Eszter Zador, winning the first set 6-1, and pushing through a competitive second set to win 6-3.
Kincaid made sure Portland State went away empty-handed on court one. Kincaid bounced back from a 2-6 loss in the first set to force a tiebreaker in the second with a 6-3 win over PSU's Alli Valk, a recent transfer from San Diego State. In the tiebreaker, Kincaid pulled ahead for the 10-6 win to give Montana the 7-0 sweep of the Vikings.
"We did really well last weekend," said Kincaid. "So we were all very confident in each other that we were going to play really well and get the win."
The Griz ended the day with their first conference win and will look to carry this momentum into a tough road match next Thursday at Gonzaga.
