The Montana women's tennis team fought off a Bulldog attack at Gonzaga University on Friday evening in Spokane, Wash., eventually falling 4-0 in the match played to clinch at the Stevens Tennis Center.
Â
The loss snaps Montana's three-match win streak and puts the Griz at 3-4 on the young season, while the Zags, who currently sit second on the West Coast Conference table behind the No. 2 ranked Pepperdine Waves, improve to 6-2.
Â
In the matches that were left unfinished when the Zags sealed the win, the Griz were on course to make things interesting, if not sneak off with an upset.
Â
"Gonzaga is a very good team with some nationally ranked players," said Head Coach Steve Ascher. "We're creating a belief that we can play with teams like this, so today was successful in that regard."
Â
In doubles, Cam Kincaid and Bianca Bostrom were on the heels of the No. 29 ranked Whittle/Rosas pair on court one, trailing 5-4 when Gonzaga sealed the point with wins on courts two and three.
Â
"I'm proud of the doubles, they looked good, and really I like some things that are going on in moments of certain sets," Ascher added.
Â
In the singles round, Montana junior Nathalie Joanlanne pushed Graciela Rosas in the first set to a 7-5 decision and was unable to finish the second set when the match was called.
Â
Bostrom also put a solid effort in on court four, falling 6-4 in the first set and remaining tied 3-3 in the second when the match ended.
Â
The Grizzlies now travel south to Lewiston, Idaho, to face the Lewis-Clark State Warriors on Saturday morning.
