The Montana women's tennis team forced a tiebreaker in an upset bid for the doubles point at Denver University on Friday but was out-gunned in the remainder of the match as the Pioneers defeated the Griz 7-0 in a one-off dual at the Denver Tennis Park.
Â
The loss to the Pioneers, who finished the 2019 season ranked No. 45 in the nation., drops the Grizzlies to 1-6 on the season while Denver improves to 5-2.
Â
Julia Ronney and Olivia Oosterbaan picked up their second doubles win of the season on court one to give the Griz an early lead in the opening round, but UM couldn't play catch-up on court three as Lauren Dunlap and Alex Walker dropped the tiebreaker 7-6 (3), giving the home team the opening point in the match.
Â
The doubles loss took the wind out of Montana's sails heading into the singles round, with Denver running away with straight-sets victories on each of the six courts.
Â
The Grizzlies will return to altitude on Feb. 27 for their conference opener against Northern Arizona in Flagstaff, followed by a neutral-site dual against New Mexico on the 28th, and a quick jaunt to Tucson to face the University of San Francisco and Arizona on Feb. 29.Â
