The University of Montana women's tennis team returns to action this week, traveling to Las Vegas to challenge themselves against the best in the west at the premiere event of the fall tournament season - the 2021 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Region Championships.
Â
This year's ITA Mountain Regional will be held at the Fertitta Tennis Complex at UNLV for a third-straight year, not counting 2020's canceled event due to Covid.
Â
More than 120 players from 20 of the top D-I teams in the West face off as individuals from Wednesday through Sunday on 12 courts each day in both singles and doubles.
Â
The Grizzlies enter the tournament with two weeks of preparation under their belts following a championship performance at Washington State's Cougar Classic in late September.
Â
In Pullman, Montana won a pair of doubles bracket championships, made a semifinal run in the main singles draw, and advanced to a consolation draw final as well against some of the best competition in the Northwest.
Â
"We are excited to experience a regional tournament after not having one last year," said head coach Steve Ascher. Â
Â
"The ability to congregate and play everyone in the region is a special experience. We are ready to roll and get after some great tennis this week."
Â
The ITA D-I Regional Championships feature some of the top women's players across the country, with regional doubles champions and regional singles champions and finalists qualifying for the season-ending ITA National Fall Championships.
Â
Wednesday's first round gets under way with Round of 64 doubles at 9:00 a.m. PT, followed by a full Round of 64 singles – with two flights. There will be added matches in singles to ensure each entrant at least two outings.
Â
The finals are set for Sunday. Admission to all matches is free of charge. UNLV will not provide live coverage or scoring of the matches until the semifinal round.
