The Montana women's tennis team opened the weekend on the road with a 5-2 non-conference loss to Washington State Friday afternoon at the Simmelink courts at Hollingberry Fieldhouse in Pullman. This is the first time in recent years that the Griz (1-2) have scored more than one point against the Cougars (2-0).
Â
"The team came out with really good energy and competed well tonight. Lauren and Grace played a smart doubles match. Lauren battled and dug deep to pull out a great match at #3 singles. It was as fun to watch the growth for last week," said head coach Steve Ascher.
Â
WSU came out the gate strong, clinching the doubles point to put them up 1-0 over UM. Senior Lauren Dunlap and freshman Grace Haugen won the only doubles match for the Griz, 6-4, over Cougars Kumhom/Lee on court one.
Â
On court three, Grizzlies Ivayla Mitkova and Claudia Reguant fell to WSU's Murphy/Abouelsaad duo, 2-6. The same result came on court two with Rosie Sterk and Olivia Oosterbaan falling 2-6 against the Le-Nguyen/Tse pair.
Â
Continuing the momentum from doubles, the Cougars jumped on Montana early in position one, where Montana's Haugen faced WSU senior Savanna Ly-Nguyen. Haugen took the loss in two sets, 1-6, 1-6.Â
Â
On court two, junior Griz Oosterbaan went back-and-forth with Maxine Murphy, ending in a two-set loss (2-6,2-6).
Â
UM's Mitkova battled it out with Cougar Fifa Kumhom, bringing Kumhom to seven in the second set. The Grizzly fell in two sets, 0-6, 5-7.
Â
On court three, Montana senior, Dunlap, gave the Griz their first point of the day after defeating Elyse Tse in a tight third set super breaker. Dunlap fought in two sets, posting results of 6-1, 6-7, 1-0.
Â
In position six, freshman Sterk defeated Yang Lee, putting the second point on the board for Montana.
Â
The last match of the day resulted in a loss for the Grizzlies with Reguant facing WSU's Hania Abouelsaad. Reguant made it a tight match throughout both sets, but fell 3-6 and 5-7.
Â
Montana will be back in action Saturday to face LC State for a doubleheader in Lewiston, Idaho. The matches will start at 10 a.m. (MT) and 3 p.m. (MT) at the LC State Tennis Center. Â
