The Montana women's tennis team took its first win of the three-match tour versus Dixie State, winning 6-1. The match started with a sweep in doubles and ended with an all-around team effort to pull out the win.
"There was great energy in doubles to start off the match. We did a great job setting the tone by grabbing some early leads in the first set. Lauren Dunlap finished her match putting a strong performance in the second tie-breaker," said head coach Steve Ascher.
There's no better way to start out a match by getting a full sweep in doubles. On court two, Grace Haugen and Maria Goheen paired up for the first time this season to take down DSU's Hildreth/Hsu pair 6-1. From there, Grizzlies Lauren Dunlap and Rosie Sterk defeated the Dorny/Longston duo 6-4 to clinch the doubles point. Juniors Olivia Oosterbaan and Ivayla Mitkova finished doubles strong after beating the Trailblazers' Honczaruk/Mellor pair 6-2 on court one.
Keeping the momentum going from doubles, the Griz didn't let up. Playing in position two, Oosterbaan didn't let off the gas and took down Ya-Chi Hsu in straight sets (6-3, 6-0).
Dixie State tried to gain some ground on court five after Trailblazer Rachel Mellor defeated Griz Mitkova (6-0, 6-2), making the score 2-1.
Tightening the score only gave Montana more motivation to finish the match strong. On court six, freshman Grizzly Sterk beat DSU's Jane Dorny in straight sets (6-0, 7-5) to put UM up two on the DSU.
Junior Goheen took it to Sabrina Longson to extend her record to 2-0 on the season. The Grizzly took down Longson in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
On court one, Haugen won in straight-sets defeating Alexandra Hildreth in straight-sets 6-3, 6-2.
Dunlap was the last to finish in position three, where she took care of business and won in straight sets after winning a tiebreaker versus Juliana Honczaruk (6-3, 7-6 (2)).
Montana extends its record to 4-3 on the season and looks to improve it tomorrow versus UNLV. The Griz are set to play at 11 a.m. (MT) at the Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas, Nev.
