MISSOULA, Mont. – The Montana women's tennis team suffered its fifth conference loss of the season versus Weber State at the PEAK Racquet Club Saturday afternoon. The Griz (5-12, 0-5 BSC) fell to the Wildcats (10-6, 4-0 BSC) by one point which was decided in the last two matches of the day.
"I was proud of how the team came out in doubles and gave the team a chance to earn that first point. We then battled down to the wire with a good Weber team," said head coach Steve Ascher.
Weber State took the first point of the day in doubles, despite the competitive efforts the Griz showed. Juniors Olivia Oosterbaan and Maria Goheen took down Weber State's Ferreira/Davies, 7-5, on court two, giving the Griz an energetic start.
From there, Wildcats Kuo/Morett came out on top in position one, winning 7-5, over Grizzlies Lauren Dunlap and Grace Haugen, bringing the deciding point to the last doubles match.
UM's Ivayla Mitkova and Alex Walker competed against the Ukita/Lombardi duo, bringing the match to a tiebreaker. Ukita/Lombardi won 7-6 (3) to clinch the doubles point for Weber State.
Though Weber State had the momentum going into singles, junior Oosterbaan broke that momentum on court one, where she defeated Ana Morett in straight sets (6-0, 6-3) to knot up the score 1-1.
Soon after, UM's Mitkova fell to WSU's Yuuna Ukita in straight sets (6-3, 6-1) in position four.
Weber State continued to gain momentum throughout singles after Wildcat Megan Davies took down Grizzly Goheen in straight sets (6-4, 6-3), putting the Wildcats up 3-1.
In position six, WSU's Megan Lombardi defeated UM' Claudia Reguant in straight sets (6-4, 6-2), to clinch the match for the Wildcats.
Though the match was clinched, senior Walker didn't give up, pushing Sicely Ferreira to three sets and coming away with a win. Walker won 6-2 in the first, lost 6-1 in the second and came back to win 6-3 in the third, making the overall score of the match 3-4.
The Griz will be back on the courts next week on Friday, April 1 and Saturday, April 2 at the PEAK Racquet Club, facing Idaho State at 9 a.m. and Northern Arizona at 2 p.m. Admission is free for all fans and spectators.
