Griz host Big Sky leaders this weekend

The Montana soccer team will host Big Sky Conference leaders Idaho and Eastern Washington this weekend at South Campus Stadium in Missoula as the league schedule enters week No. 2.

The Grizzlies (4-3-5, 1-1-0 BSC) will play the Vandals (7-1-2, 2-0-0 BSC) on Friday at 3 p.m., the Eagles at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Â
Idaho and Eastern Washington are tied with Portland State atop the Big Sky standings after all three teams opened league with a pair of wins last week.

This week's matches will pair the Big Sky's highest-ranked teams in the NCAA RPI. Idaho is 162, Montana is 176, Eastern Washington is 208.

The Eagles open their weekend playing at the Big Sky's No. 4 ranked team, Northern Colorado, on Friday night. The Bears are 228 in the RPI.

The matches are the start of a three-week, four-match home stand for the Grizzlies, who will host preseason favorite Northern Colorado on Sunday, Oct. 9, Northern Arizona on Sunday, Oct. 16.

Montana will wrap up the regular season with road matches at Idaho State and Weber State on Oct. 21 and 23, with the six-team Big Sky tournament opening on Wednesday, Nov. 2, in Greeley, Colo.

The Grizzlies outshot the Vikings 18-12, created more corner kicks and had a 58-42 time of possession advantage but still walked away with a loss.

How rare was it? Montana's only other losses this season had come against Pittsburgh, now 10-1-0 and ranked No. 14 nationally, and against Portland, now 6-0-4 and ranked 18th.

The loss was just the sixth for Montana in 44 matches against Big Sky opponents under fifth-year coach Chris Citowicki and snapped the Grizzlies' six-match unbeaten streak against the Vikings.

Montana is 129-63-29 all-time at home, 61-18-17 in Big Sky matches. The Grizzlies are 25-3-9 in Big Sky home matches since the start of the 2014 season.
