The Montana women's tennis team opens its fall season on the road this weekend with three days of action at the Idaho State Bengal Invitational, Sept. 8-10, on the outdoor courts at Capell Park in Chubbuck.
The first matches of the tournament get underway Friday at noon, with Saturday and Sunday matches slated to start at 9 a.m.
Set to participate in the annual Bengal Invitational with the Grizzlies are Big Sky Conference and regional foes Boise State, Montana State, Utah Tech, and host Idaho State.
Making the trip for the Griz are Olivia Oosterbaan, back in 2023-24 for her fifth season, and fellow senior Ivayla Mitkova, junior Rosie Sterk, sophomores Shivika Agrawal and Hailey Murphy, and freshman Kelsey Phillips.
With the fall semester at UM less than two weeks old, head coach Steve Ascher says this week's action is about assessing where the team stands with four other tournaments on the schedule before November.
"It is early, so I think the big thing with fall is looking at doubles combinations and then getting information to take back and train with to back home and build on," said Ascher.
"We're looking ahead to January, so we'd love to get this information and put the players under pressure. We talk a lot about handling different mental skills, so putting them into some pressure situations will be nice. But really, we're just getting as much information as we can to keep improving over the next few months."
The invitational format will provide several draws of competition based on ability in both singles and doubles play, with a bracket champion crowned in each. Results will be available on GoGriz.com following the tournament.
Montana returns to action Sept. 22-24 at the Bose State Invitational following this weekend's season-opener.
The Griz enter the new year looking to build on a successful season in 2022-23 that saw UM advance to the Big Sky Conference Tournament for the first time in seven seasons.
