The Montana women's tennis team opened its fall tournament season with some solid results against regional competition at the Idaho State Invitational in Pocatello over the weekend.
Facing-off against teams from Boise State, Montana State, Utah Tech, and ISU, the Griz went 5-9 overall in singles and 3-5 in doubles, with the tourney broken into two brackets in each discipline.
Junior Rosie Sterk, an all-conference doubles pick last spring, showed her continued growth, going a combined 4-2 in singles and doubles.
The native of Scotland beat Boise State's Ryan Kershner in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 in the black singles draw round of 16 to open the tourney. After a loss in the quarterfinal, she picked up another win over Ana Sembere of Utah Tech 6-3, 6-4, in the consolation draw.
With her doubles partner Hailey Murphy, the pair started with a win in the quarterfinal of the A draw beating the Hsu / Venkatarishnan pair from Utah Tech 8-5, but fell to the Olideadha sisters pair from ISU in the semifinal. They capped their weekend with a win in the A doubles back draw, beating the Mellor/Berdecio pair from Utah Tech 8-3.
Senior Olivia Oosterbaan started her tournament strong with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Ana Conde of Boise State in the Orange singles draw. She then bowed out in the quarterfinal, falling to Asem Shoybek of Idaho State 6-4, 6-2.
Freshman Kelsey Phillips picked up her first collegiate win in her first collegiate match, beating Adithi Venkatarishnan of Utah Tech in three sets in the Orange draw quarterfinal, coming back from a first-set loss to win 6-7, 6-3, 6-2.
"It was really good to just get back into it. Get in the reps, get in the rhythm, get back to figuring out what we need to do to improve," said head coach Steve Ascher.
"It was nice to see Rosie go 4-2 in doubles and singles, really stepping up her game and taking some risk. It was also fun watching Kelsey get her first college win, coming back from down early. Good weekend overall, and we did a lot of learning."
Montana returns to action in two weeks, traveling south again to compete in the Boise State Invitational Sept. 22-24.
