The Montana women's tennis team returns to the road this weekend, heading west to the Palouse as the Grizzlies seek their first win of the season.
The Griz (0-6) open the weekend in Lewiston, Idaho, for a dual against Lewis-Clark State (3-4) before heading north to take on Washington State (5-2) in Pullman.
Montana and the Warriors get underway at 3 p.m. (MT) on Friday afternoon at the LCSC Tennis Center, and cap the weekend against the Cougars on Saturday at 1 p.m. (MT) at the Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
Both matches will have live video streams available, with links available on the team schedule page at GoGriz.com.
"We're excited to keep learning thru match experience. It's our last weekend of nonconference play, so we want to keep getting healthier and preparing for the Big Sky schedule," said head coach Steve Ascher.
"I'm excited to watch the team compete and see players continue to step up and get after their opponents."
Montana enters the road trip coming off a two match homestand where they dropped a nonconference dual to Eastern Washington 2-5 without two of the top players in the lineup before narrowly missing out on an upset of Utah State in a 3-4 loss.
Sophomore Hailey Murphy and senior Maria Goheen each went 2-0 in singles with Murphy playing her first match of the season on the No. 1 court.
Murphy has been a standout for the Griz so far this season, winning four of her first six matches and pushing one of the losses to a third set.
Senior Olivia Oosterbaan has also been effective for Montana sitting at 3-3 on the year and heading to the Palouse coming off a win against Utah State.
SCOUTING THE WARRIORS: Lewis-Clark State, an NAIA program, will play its first D-I match of the season when the Griz come calling on Friday. At 3-4 on the early season, LCSC has picked up two wins over the College of Idaho and another over Whitworth.LC State is coached by longtime mentor Kai Fong who is in his 35th year with the Warriors.
SCOUTING THE COUGS: Montana ramps up the competition Saturday against Wazzu in Pullman, who enter the match at 5-2. Four of those five wins have come against Big Sky programs as well, giving Montana a litmus test to measure itself against heading into league play. The Cougars have shut-out both EWU and Portland State 7-0 and beat both Idaho and Idaho State 5-2. WSU's fifth win came over Boise State in Boise as well, a 7-0 win for the Cougs. Wazzu is led by second-year coach Raquel Atawo, who guided former Cougar Michaela Bayerlova to All-American status.
UP NEXT: Montana opens conference play with a trip to Oregon in the first weekend of March. The Griz open the trip against the Portland Pilots on Friday before starting their Big Sky schedule at Portland State on Sunday.
