The Montana softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader on Friday afternoon, falling 11-2 and 6-2 to Weber State as the teams opened a three-game series at Grizzly Softball Field in Missoula.
Â
The Wildcats (16-23, 4-1 BSC), who have won seven of their last eight games, batted .418 on the day, with nine of their 23 hits going for extra bases, including five home runs.
Â
Weber State broke open a tight Game 1, which was scoreless through three innings, with five runs in the top of the fourth, six more in the top of the fifth.
Â
Abby Grundy hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning, a three-run home run in the fifth to finish the day 3 for 3 with five runs batted in and two runs scored.
Â
That offensive outburst had the Grizzlies (7-30, 0-5 BSC) facing an 11-0 deficit going to the bottom of the fifth, with a run-rule loss looming.
Â
"When you have multiple innings with crooked numbers right when you're starting to figure out the starting pitcher as an offense, it puts you in a hole," said coach Stef Ewing.
Â
"All of a sudden, you're faced with three outs to do something with. I thought we made good adjustments to be able to score in that last inning."
Â
Holding an 11-run lead, Weber State replaced starter Cali McCraw with RJ Parra to start the bottom of the fifth, and she didn't record an out before McCraw was called upon to re-enter the game.
Â
Chloe Saxton had a single in the inning, Anna Cockhill a sacrifice fly and Presley Jantzi an RBI single that scored Saxton. The game ended with Madison Tarrant lining out to center on a well-hit ball.
Â
Jantzi and Hannah Jablonski both had two hits in the game. Brianna Lachermeier, Siona Halwani and Grace Hardy each pitched for the Grizzlies.
Â
Montana held a pair of leads in Game 2, going up 1-0 in the first and 2-1 in the third before Weber State pulled away with runs in each of the last four innings.
Â
The Grizzlies got on the board in the bottom of the first with its usual playmakers. Cockhill singled to left, stole second, her 21st stolen base of the season, then scored on a Jantzi single.
Â
Weber State wasted little time tying the game at 1-1, the Wildcats' leadoff batter in the top of the second hitting a home run to left-center.
Â
Montana retook the lead in the bottom of the third, with Tarrant hitting a two-out single down the left-field line, then scoring on a double by Makena Strong, Strong's third career extra-base hit.
Â
Weber State scored one in the fourth, two in the fifth, one in the sixth on Grundy's third home run of the day and one in the seventh on the Wildcats' fifth home run of the day.
Â
Montana had five hits through the first three innings, just two more the rest of the way but drove multiple balls to the deepest parts of the ballpark before they were tracked down by Wildcats.
Â
"Those were good swings and good at-bats. We keep telling the girls, the work you're putting in, it's right there," said Ewing. "You have to keep trusting it. They are going to turn into good results."
Â
Montana had seven hits in the game, matching its highest total against a Division I opponent in more than a month.
Â
"For our last six games, our at-bats have continued to get better," added Ewing. "We just have to keep going and keep staying positive and the ball is going to bounce our way.
Â
"We have to keep grinding. That's how this game gets sometimes. No matter what you do, you don't feel like you're getting a break. We just have to keep pushing."
Â
Tarrant and Strong both had two-hit games. It was Tarrant's ninth career multiple-hit game, Strong's fourth.
Â
Cameryn Ortega got the start for Montana and allowed one run over two innings with four strikeouts but couldn't pitch any deeper into the game. Grace Haegele pitched the final five innings.
Â
The teams will wrap up the series with a game at noon on Saturday.
