
Grizzlies triumph over Bobcats, Warriors

The Brawl of the Wild is known throughout the state for its intensity and passion displayed by both Montana and Montana State. With a substantial attendance of both Griz and Cat fans at the Peak Racquet Club in Missoula Saturday, both fan bases got a match they will not forget anytime soon.
The Grizzlies (2-4, 2-0 BSC) defeated the Bobcats (3-6, 2-2 BSC) in a tight 4-3 score, in a match that went back and forth for much of the day.
The Bobcats got rolling early, winning the doubles point.
(2/29/2016) WTennis: vs. Montana State (2.27.16) At No. 1, Laura Middel and Naomi Holopainen defeated Haley Driver and Frances Dean 6-3. Jessica Brycki and Angelina Philippova at No. 2 defeated Hannah Sulz and Cam Kincaid 6-1. At No. 3 Linda Vink and Shelby Cerkovnvik defeated Lidia Dukic and Stanzi Stuijt with a score of 6-3.
Down early the Griz showed no sign of surrender down 1-0 entering singles.
At No. 1 Haley Driver got the Griz on the board defeating Naomi Holopainen 6-4, 6-2. Frances Dean was defeated by Laura Middel at No. 2 by scores of 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
Lidia Dukic defeated Jessica Brycki 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3. Montana State rebounded at No. 4 with Angelina Philippova defeating Hannah Sulz 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
With the match on the line and the Bobcats leading 3-2 Cam Kincaid at No. 5 defeated Linda Vink 6-2, 6-3. With the score tied 3-3 it came down to No. 6, where Catherine Orfanos needed to defeat Shelby Cerkovnik if the Grizzlies wanted to win the Brawl of the Wild.
Orfanos came through in the clutch, defeating Cerkovnik 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. Her victory would be celebrated by both teammates and fans as the Grizzlies won the Brawl of the Wild by defending the Peak.
Dukic a freshman for the Grizzlies, experienced her first-ever Brawl of the Wild. "The Griz and Cat energy is new to me, but once I got into the rhythm of the game I was really pumped and excited to beat them."
When asked how she felt watching Orfanos compete with the match on the line, her confidence and support of her teammate was evident.
"When she won the second set I had total confidence that she would beat her in the third set. She had really good rhythm was playing aggressive and solid. It was obvious she was going to win."
The Grizzlies have won their past two matches, both conference matches. Asked how his team has achieved success after a difficult start to the season, coach Steve Ascher gave a resounding answer. "It's the history of our program as time goes on we get better and better. We want to peak in March and April. I think this was a nice feather in our cap winning against a competitive Montana State team."
More than the match and rivalry itself, he wanted it to be known that fan and community support has been crucial to the program's success on and off the court. "It's important for the student-athletes to understand how it all works in terms of where their scholarships come from. It's people and community, it's why Missoula and the University of Montana are exciting, because we are an amazing community of people and that we're providing a product that is exciting to watch."
Montana will complete its double-header playing Lewis-Clark State at 5 p.m. The Grizzlies will next play on the road March 18 against UNLV in Las Vegas.

Coming off a sensational win against the Bobcats the Grizzlies (3-4) wasted no time taking care of business mauling Lewis-Clark State (2-10) by a score of 7-0 to conclude a doubleheader Saturday at the Peak Racquet Club in Missoula.
The Grizzlies have won their last three matches, two of which came against Big Sky Conference foes.
The Griz domination started immediately when doubles began. Haley Driver and Frances Dean at No. 1 defeated Lauren Lang and Kianna Arthur 7-6. Hannah Sulz and Cam Kincaid defeated Hannah Vhlenkott and Jen Roux at No. 2 6-2. At No. 3 Stanzi Stuijt and Lidia Dukic defeated Anna Rodriquez and Deanri Human 6-0.
With doubles secured Montana was primed to finish Lewis-Clark State.
