Griz open weekend with pair of wins

The Montana men's tennis team got both the challenge and the results it was looking for on Friday with a pair of wins in a doubleheader against George Fox and Whitman in Walla Walla, Washington.
Despite victories on singles courts one and two by the upstart Bruins, the Griz (3-3) took care of business lower in the lineup to pick up a 5-2 win over George Fox to start the day at Whitman.
With a shuffled lineup, Montana then capped the afternoon with a 6-1 win over D-III tennis' No. 27 Blues on their home court.
"It wasn't a perfect day, but the guys competed hard," said head coach Jason Brown. "Those are two quality D-III schools that we played on the road. They gave us everything we wanted, and the guys responded, so I'm happy with the results."
George Fox made the Griz work to earn the doubles point at the start of the day with a 7-6 (8) tiebreaker win on court two over UM seniors Max Korkh and Ludvig Hallgren. Comfortable wins from Ed Pudney and Oisin Shaffrey on court one, and Milo Benn and Pontus Hallgren on court three led to an early UM lead, however.
In singles, the Bruin's twelfth-ranked leadoff player Will Leach proved that a nationally ranked player can compete at any level with a tight win over Korkh on court one 6-2, 7-6 (4), while the No. 50-ranked Luke Lemeitre knocked off Ludvig Hallgren in three sets 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 (5).
The remainder of the match against the Bruins went according to plan for the Grizzlies, with Pudney, Shaffrey, Benn, and Pontus Hallgren each picking up straight-set wins to make the final score 5-2 in favor of UM.
Montana then picked up its fifth-straight doubles point – the second most in a row for the Griz since 2018 – when Pudney and Shaffrey won again on court one and Korkh and Ludvig Hallgren got a win on three.
In singles, Montana clinched the win in short order with wins on courts two through six, each in straight sets. The Grizzlies only stumble of the match came with Pudney playing on singles court one for the first time in his career. The sophomore cruised to a 6-2 win over Whitman's Ben Kirsch in the first set, but Kirsch caught fire in the second and battled his way to a 2-6, 7-6 (5), 16-14 marathon win.
The Griz now travel to Lewiston, Idaho, for a one-off dual against Lewis-Clark State on Sunday afternoon to complete the three-match weekend.
