Women’s Tennis continues fall season at Eagle Invitational
10/5/2023 4:20:00 PM | Women's Tennis
The Montana women's tennis team returns to action this weekend for one final fall tune-up before regionals at the Eagle Invitational hosted by Eastern Washington Oct. 6-8 in Cheney.
Fresh off winning a doubles title at the Barb Chandler Classic at Boise State, Montana will send six of the squad's eight players on the team to EWU.
The format of the Eagle Invitational will be the same as the Chandler Classic: a mini-dual competition with teams divided into pairs to play one doubles and two singles matches per round. The team with the most points will advance in the bracket.
The Griz are one of four teams competing in Cheney, with Idaho and the University of Seattle joining Montana and the host Eagles. Links to draws and results can be found at GoGriz.com.
Making the trip for the Griz are Shivika Agrawal, Maria Goheen, Ivayla Mitkova, Hailey Murphy, Olivia Oosterbaan, and Rosie Sterk.
Sterk won the Orange Draw doubles title two weeks ago in Boise and went 2-1 in singles to advance to the final. The junior from Scotland was an all-conference doubles pick last spring and has had a strong fall season, going a combined 4-2 in singles and doubles at the Idaho State Invitational to start the fall season.
With regionals around the corner, head coach Steve Ascher is looking for continued improvement out of his team in Cheney.
"We're going to mix up the teams a bit, so I'm excited about that and excited to see some different pairings before we head into regionals," said Ascher.
"We're just continuing that process of improving. After two tournaments this fall, I think we're more aware of what we need to do to improve, and this is a great chance to work on those things."
Montana will next turn its attention to the premiere event of the fall tourney season, the ITA Mountain Regional, this year set to be held at the Eccles Tennis Center in Salt Lake City hosted by the University of Utah.
The Mountain Regional features players from the top D-I teams in the Rocky Mountain West, from Montana to New Mexico, and runs Oct. 18-21.
The Griz then cap the fall season at the Gonzaga Invitational Oct. 27-29 in Spokane.
