Haugen and Sterk win a doubles title in Boise

Grace Haugen and Rosie Sterk, both juniors on the Montana women's tennis team, advanced to the orange draw championship round and claimed the doubles title to lead the Grizzlies at the Barb Chandler Classic at Boise State over the weekend.
The Grizzly duo went 3-0 in doubles to win the title and won four of their six singles matches in the mini-dual competition that saw regional teams divided into pairs to compete in one doubles match and two singles matches per round. The team with the most points advanced in the bracket in one of three draws: blue, orange, and white.
To claim the doubles win, Haugen and Sterk swept teams from the defending Big Sky champion Weber State on day one and Montana State on day two. The pair then won the doubles round over Idaho State's Cho/Morris pair in the finals but fell in their two singles matches.
"It was a huge weekend for Grace and Rosie. They just played really well. They gelled in doubles, had a couple of really good matches, then a match where they had to work through some things when they weren't playing their best and just made some really good decisions to win," said head coach Steve Ascher.
"Going undefeated in doubles was great, and they competed well. We've only had two weeks since the first tournament, and they're already showing marked improvement, which is awesome."
Haugen and Sterk started the weekend taking down the Hill/Schnell pair from Weber State in Orange Draw doubles and singles. The two Grizzlies breezed past their Wildcat counterparts 6-1 in the doubles match before Haugen defeated Schnell 6-2, 6-4 in singles. Sterk also defeated Hill in three sets of singles (6-2, 4-6, 6-0) to give UM the 3-0 win.
In the semifinal round of the Orange Draw the pair ground out a 6-4 doubles win over Montana State's Bean/Lerman pair for their second win. They kept the momentum in singles with Haugen beating Lerman 6-2, 6-3, and Sterk beating Bean 6-1, 7-5.
In the Orange Draw final, Haugen and Sterk clinched the doubles title with a decisive win over Idaho State's Hana Cho and Sydney Morris 6-2. The Bengal duo got the best of the Griz in singles, however, with Cho needing three sets to beat Haugen (3-6, 6-4, 6-1) and Morris grinding out a win over Sterk 7-6, 7-5.
Other highlights for the Griz include a win for freshman Kelsey Phillips over Paula Dougherty, her counterpart from Montana State, in the Blue Draw consolation and a team win for Shivika Agrawal and Ivayla Mitkova in the White Draw consolation final over Idaho State.
Montana returns to action in two weeks with one final warm-up tournament at Eastern Washington Oct. 6-8 before heading to Salt Lake City for the premiere event of the fall, the ITA Mountain Regional, Oct. 18-21.
