Kaylin Kielty earned her first spring dual victory as a Grizzly as Montana's lone winner in a 6-1 loss to the Utah Utes at the Eccles Tennis Center on Friday afternoon in Salt Lake City.
The junior, who sat out her first season at UM in 2025 while recovering from injury, took a singles win in a third set tiebreaker over Utah's Andjelija Markovic to secure the only team point for the Grizzlies.
The loss drops UM to 0-3 on the season after the Griz fell to both Utah and Utah State in consecutive days. Montana fell behind Utah early in the nonconference dual with a loss in the doubles round and lost five of six singles as Utah improved to 3-1 on the early season.
"We played a good match against Utah today. Kaylin played well, really pushed her opponent, and earned a nice win. She moved well, continued to counter back, and kept herself up in the score. It was great to earn that win in singles," said head coach Steve Ascher.
"We also saw players reaching deeper and finding ways to earn more games. I think the problem solving and the commitment to competing and pushing their opponents deeper is growing."
Montana opened the match with a pair of 6-1 losses on doubles courts one and three leading to the opening point going Utah's way. Montana was in with a shot on court two, however, when Paige Bott and Kielty were tied with Utah's Medora/Moore pair 4-4 when the doubles point was clinched, leaving the match unfinished.
In singles, Utah rattled off straight set wins on courts one through three to clinch the win just as the bottom of the Grizzly lineup was finding its form.
Kamila Slovakova won eight games in her loss on court four while Bott pulled out nine game wins to compete well in second set losses. Meanwhile Kielty was the only Grizzly to win a first set, beating Markovic 7-5, 0-6, 1-0(8) to seal a bounce-back victory.
UP NEXT: Montana gets a Big Sky preview in nonconference play when the Griz stop into Pocatello on their way back north to face Idaho State in a Sunday dual at Reed Gym, with action starting at 9 a.m.
