NEWBERG, Ore. – The Montana women's tennis team took its fifth win of the season over George Fox Saturday evening. The Griz picked up their second shutout of the season, winning 7-0. Five of six Griz players won in straight sets versus the Bruins.
"We're feeling confident heading back into conference play tomorrow after a great win," said junior Griz, Maria Goheen.
The Griz were hot in doubles, sweeping on all three courts and clinching the first point of the day. Grizzlies Rosie Sterk and Maria Goheen picked up a 6-1 win over Bruins Mangan/Vanderyacht. Seniors Lauren Dunlap and Alex Walker also posted a 6-1 win over the Wiker/Hitch duo to clinch the point. Juniors Olivia Oosterbaan and Ivayla Mitkova finished the job on court one, where they beat GFU's Brown/Morris 6-4.
Keeping the momentum going from doubles, senior Walker took care of business in position five, where she defeated Cassey Hitch in straight sets (6-0, 6-1) to start off singles play.
It was a battle of the upperclassmen on court one, where Oosterbaan won in straight sets over George Fox senior Danielle Brown (6-1, 6-2).
UM freshman Sterk made her fifth singles debut, clinching the win for the Griz, putting the team up 4-0. The Grizzly took down Abigail Bond in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
Goheen shut out her opponent in straight sets on court three, beating Emily McDonald 6-0, 6-0. This is the first time in her career that she shut her opponent out in both sets.
Grizzly Mitkova kept the ball rolling for the Griz in position four, defeating GFU's Olivia Morris in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
Last but most definitely not least, senior Dunlap made a comeback on court two while she was playing Bruin Kalli Wiker. The Grizzly went down in the first set 6-1, but kicked it into gear to win the second set 6-2 and bring the match to a super tiebreaker. From there, the senior won 10-6, clinching the shutout for the Griz.
Montana will be back in action tomorrow versus Big Sky foe, Portland State, in Portland, Ore. The match is scheduled for a noon (MT) start at the Tualatin Hills Babette Horenstein Tennis Center.
