Griz go 1-1 in Oregon

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Montana women's tennis team fell to Portland state, 6-1, Sunday afternoon at the Tualatin Hills Babette Horenstein Tennis Center. The Griz (5-11, 0-4 BSC) concluded their last road match of the regular season against the Vikings (6-8, 1-3 BSC).
"We have a couple of weeks to look into our doubles. We need to get off to faster starts and start earning the first point in the match. We're looking forward to being at home competing in a couple of weeks," said head coach Steve Ascher.
Portland State clinched the first point of the day after sweeping doubles. Seniors Lauren Dunlap and Alex Walker faced Vikings Hernandez/Rees on court two, where they lost 6-2. On court three, Rosie Sterk and Maria Goheen fell to Milenkoski/Ohara 6-2, allowing for PSU to clinch the point and go up 1-0. Vikings Beukers/Sanoner took down Griz juniors Olivia Oosterbaan and Ivayla Mitkova 6-3 on court one.
PSU stayed strong through singles, making it hard for UM to find results. Finishing first in position five was Sterk, where she faced Makoto Ohara. Sterk fell in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.
Goheen made an appearance on court two, going up against Jacinta Milenkoski, where she lost in straight sets (6-2, 6-0).
UM's Mitkova fell in straight sets in position four to PSU's Emily Rees, 6-2, 6-2. Rees's win clinched the win for Portland State, putting them up 4-0.
The last match that ended in straight sets was on court six, where Walker faced Majo Hernandez. Hernandez took the match, winning 6-4 in both sets.
In position one, junior Oosterbaan gave Capu Sanoner a run for her money, taking the Viking to a super tiebreaker. The junior lost 5-7 in the first set, but made a comeback in the second, winning 6-4. The two battled it out in a super tiebreaker, where Sanoner won 10-5.
Grizzly Dunlap made another come back to give the Griz their lone point of the day. The Grizzly took on Viking Nika Beaukers on court three, falling in the first set 6-3, but coming back in the second to win 6-4. The Griz then went into a super tiebreaker, where she won 10-8.
Montana will be back in action on Saturday, March 26, taking on Weber State as the team searches for its first Big Sky Conference win of the season. The match is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start, taking place in Missoula, Mont. at the PEAK Racquet Club. Admission is free for all fans and spectators.
